Match Report: Ventnor 1st XV v Nomads (away)
Nomads 9 – Ventnor RFC 22
Another win for Ventnor in their league campaign puts them one step closer to the top of the table. This match against the Portsmouth based Nomads was not a pretty affair but there were moments of good play from both sides.
The visitors dominated the early stages of play and the first score came from Todd Riches who went over from a Ventnor scrum.
An unfortunate injury to Rob Newton resulted in an early substitution and reorganisation of the Ventnor pack who dominated both their own and the Nomads scrummage throughout the day. Riches again drove towards the line taking the entire defence with him and offloaded to Ross Harris who scooped the ball up to dive over in the corner and add to the visitors score. Marriott kicked a conversion and a penalty to take the half time score to 15 – 0 in Ventnor’s favour.
The Nomads came back strongly after the interval but could only kick three penalties to gain any points. Ventnor replied with more physical scrummaging and a try for Ben Cooper, taking the ball at pace and on the gain line to beat his opposite man and then speeding around the full back to score.
The game became more disjointed as full time approached but the visitors defence held strong as Nomads tried to run a series of penalties over the line only to be repelled every time thanks to another immense effort from the Ventnor pack.
The Wightlink man of the match was Ben Lush with another great all round performance whilst Fergus Kenny took the A J Wells Black Dog award.
