Ventnor 37 – 7 Fareham Heathens

By GH

Ventnor returned to winning ways against Fareham Heathens on Saturday. Ventnor started brightly and took an early lead when, after good work by the forwards, Wightlink Man of the Match Sam Pickard went over in the corner for an unconverted try.

Ben Cooper slotted over a long-range penalty shortly after to make it 8-0.

Ventnor looked impressive all over the field and it was against the run of play that Fareham intercepted a pass deep in their own half to close the gap to just 1 point.

Ventnor lifted their game from the restart and, with Fergus Kenny controlling the game at fly half and the forwards controlling the breakdowns and set pieces, Ventnor began to play some exciting rugby. Harris finished off a flowing move just before the break to give Ventnor a 15 – 7 lead at half-time.

Unlike in previous weeks, Ventnor came out blazing in the second half and continued to play open expansive rugby.

Tom Englegardt had a fantastic match at full back, constantly running onto the ball at pace, breaking tackles and was rewarded with 2 tries midway through the second half.

Lewis Jones scored the final try. This was a big step up in performance from Ventnor and hopefully can be continued in their next match. The match was kindly sponsored by Ventnor Haven Fishery, Signpost Express and AJ Wells.
