Well this is the last one of the Summer!   Summer I hear you cry what Summer!?

I hope that we will see a good turn out on the 30th August for the Club’s first game of the 08/09 Campaign at Sandown v the S&S Hurricanes. Training is going well, although worryingly there are a number of absentees, who also are not answering their phones!!!  I think the maybe the Skippers may have to chase them.

The past week or so has seen the following:

• Carnival Run: Monday night a team from Ventnor Rugby club took part in the Carnival run. The team had to run in relay from from Ventnor – Bonchurch as a 10 person team. There were 8 teams in all & we managed to come 2nd behind, Ventnor Boxing club. We could have come 1st , but a number of players didn’t turn up & therefore myself, Nige & Waz had to run & I know that both Nige & I doubled the age of the team & slowed them down. The 10 were (in race order) Mark Turner, Ross Harris, Damo Marriott, Ben Amer, Mike Flanagan, Babz, Loz Morton, Nige Malkin, Tommy Wells, Waz Fresle. AP was there as our 11th man & was well pleased when Ben turned up! Paul Berry too turned up but an incident with a road sign & Tulse Hill rendered him injured! • Carnival – it was a shame we couldn’t get a float organised, but the club was represented.  Ben Amer was spotted dressed as a Pirate, Paul had recovered enough to play his kazoo in the Jazz Band & Mike Flanagan’s daughter was the proud holder of 2 cups!!! Both Nige & I experienced the Mill Bay Party!!! Burgers £2.50 all from the live barbecue!!!!
• Nolan & Kirsty’s Wedding – as you know you can still watch this live on line (check out this website), we had a gathering at ours for a number of people.  As ever it was a good evening & Bob, Kay & Waz were last seen at 2.30am walking down the footpath singing Midnight train to Georgia.  Kay I believe had a nasty attack of Baileys in the morning!!!!
• Talking of Bob & Kay – they brought round a splendid display of their home grown products (see pic below). I think next year's Horticulture shows need to look out! Nigel however is struggling to identify his Broccoli!
• Rugby news……..Tonight the ELVs meeting for all players 6.30pm at the club, pop up to learn the new laws………..Training Wednesdays 6.30pm be there or the club WILL struggle…….Lights! oh so many problems, James I am sure will put a small piece together!............Sponsors are coming in, but if you know anyone who fancies sponsoring a match let James know…………..The bar is looking good, thanks Nige & his team, the rest of the club needs a spruce now……..International tickets have all been sold, well done Bob!
• Congratulations – to Chess Morton on passing all her RAF tests, I have found my new helicopter pilot!
• Congratulations also to our Petanque Teams.  The Plonkers cleaned up the Vectis League yet again while various members – including Rob Binnie, Sean Preandegast and skipper Sean Newton seem to be cleaning all the pairs tournaments.
• And congratulations also to VRFC founder-member Martin (Wuzzy) Godden for his achievement in breaking the UK record in his class in the British Drug Free Power Lifting Championships.  Wuzzy goes on to represent GB in the World event in the autumn.
• Finally – we have received a few “the best Ventnor players ever” teams, but we need more. Please send them to James & me (s.babington05@tiscali.co.uk) as we want to compile a definitive list later in the season.

Well that’s it from me, I am off now for 2 weeks but will be back in early September.
