Match Report: Ventnor 2nd XV v Portsmouth 4ths (away)

Portsmouth 4th XV 14 – Ventnor 2nd XV 59

A nineteen man strong 2nd XV squad made the trip to Portsmouth last weekend. A great turn out led to the luxury of four substitutes to choose from.

The Portsmouth 4th XV looked a fierce bunch on first impressions which proved totally founded straight from the kick off. Their large forward line got to work moving Ventnor back towards their own try line.

The early exchanges led to several cleverly instigated penalties against Ventnor as Portsmouth targeted key players. Despite the pressure the defence held fast and eventually the ball was turned over and Ventnor could attack. The ball was quickly moved up the field and Tom Engelgardt found himself on the end of the move as he kicked through and chased hard but just ran out of pitch as the ball went dead. This was the first glimmer of hope for Ventnor as they again came under the glare of the referee and a warning was issued.

After another spell of defensive work Ventnor finally made a decisive break and Warren Fresle scored in the left corner. Portsmouth came back strongly, wounded by the five points despite having most of the possession, only to be turned over again and with a neat move down the left wing Edwin Bodros went over to score.

For a third time Portsmouth strode back down the field thanks to some hard forward running and some more penalties conceded by Ventnor. Warren Riches was the unfortunate victim of the poor discipline and was sin binned for ten minutes. Down to fourteen men Ventnor seemed to regroup and Warren Fresle scored his second try of the half.

Going into the second half 15 – 0 up two substitutions were made for some fresh legs and Ventnor never looked back. Portsmouth were unable to match their first half performance and a whole string of tries for Ventnor killed off any chance of a comeback.

Two tries for Wayne Williams and two for Chris Thomson, in his first match for Ventnor, one even ably converted by himself. Two tries from Sam Pickard after some searing runs from midfield with seemingly half the Portsmouth team hanging from him!

Ian Mudge was next up for his first try after a fifteen year break from playing!

From the resulting kick off a fantastic take by Alex Morton regained possession which was capped of by Ventnor’s last try of the day for Martin McMeechan.

Two late consolation tries for Portsmouth were not exactly the best way to end the match but after discovering that two thirds of their team actually turned out to be from their 3rd XV it proved to be an even more impressive victory than originally thought!

Match Report: Ventnor 1st XV v Nomads (away)

Another win for Ventnor in their league campaign puts them one step closer to the top of the table. This match against the Portsmouth based Nomads was not a pretty affair but there were moments of good play from both sides.

The visitors dominated the early stages of play and the first score came from Todd Riches who went over from a Ventnor scrum.

An unfortunate injury to Rob Newton resulted in an early substitution and reorganisation of the Ventnor pack who dominated both their own and the Nomads scrummage throughout the day. Riches again drove towards the line taking the entire defence with him and offloaded to Ross Harris who scooped the ball up to dive over in the corner and add to the visitors score. Marriott kicked a conversion and a penalty to take the half time score to 15 – 0 in Ventnor’s favour.

The Nomads came back strongly after the interval but could only kick three penalties to gain any points. Ventnor replied with more physical scrummaging and a try for Ben Cooper, taking the ball at pace and on the gain line to beat his opposite man and then speeding around the full back to score.

The game became more disjointed as full time approached but the visitors defence held strong as Nomads tried to run a series of penalties over the line only to be repelled every time thanks to another immense effort from the Ventnor pack.

The Wightlink man of the match was Ben Lush with another great all round performance whilst Fergus Kenny took the A J Wells Black Dog award.

This Hampshire Division 2 match, sponsored by Paddingtons of Ventnor, provided ample proof of Ventnor’s progress this season, endorsed by another excellent crowd at Watcombe Bottom. Right from the kick off the Ventnor took the game to the visitors with Jim Pemberton, Ady Entwistle and Rob Newton driving the ball into contact at speed and providing a target for the pack. Halfbacks Michael Cooper and Fergus Kenny then began releasing the backs and the scores kept coming with, significantly, everyone from 10 to 15 getting their name on the score sheet. In addition Mike Walker (and his replacement Tristan Price), Scott Jesney and Adam Pratt were out-powering the opposition front row resulting in many strikes against the head and a constant stream of possession. And even the lineout – a traditional Ventnor weakness – was beginning to flourish with Todd Riches particularly effective. Try scorers were Ben Cooper (2), Chris Dobbas, James Morley, Ross Harris, Todd Riches (2), Ben Lush (3) and Damien Marriott (2). Replacement Tom Engelgardt was unlucky not to add his name to this list when the referee decided not to play advantage when he escaped a high tackle on his way to the line. The pick of the tries was Marriott’s second effort which involved a dummy or two plus a sumptuous change of direction before the touch down beneath the posts. There were many candidates for the Wightlink Man of the Match which eventually went to Marriott both for his tries and his kicking – in all he converted eleven of the tries, many of them from far out. The A J Wells Black Dog Award went to Mike Walker although a strong case was presented by Entwistle for his crabbing run that put away Ben Cooper for his first try.

Match report: Ventnor 1st XV v Fareham Heathens

On a blustery day, with the pitch rock hard this was a stunning RFU Vase victory for the home team against Division One opposition in a match sponsored by The Mill Bay Inn.
After 20 minutes of evenly matched play, a flowing move through the hands put Ventnor’s Ross Harris over the line to score between the posts. Damien Marriott kicked the conversion.
The initiative then switched to the visitors who dominated play for the second 20 minutes of the first half, scoring on the stroke of half time.
After the break, Ventnor attempted to run the ball more often, using their quicker backs. Ben Lush scythed through the middle and scored. Tim MacAdam – on a sadly brief return – kicked the conversion. Five minutes later hooker Scott Jesney was driven over by his pack. After twenty minutes Jesney scored again, this time after finding himself on the end of a long passing move.
Heathens again had a long spell of pressure but Ventnor’s pack were immense in defence, particularly Paul Berry, James Pemberton and returnee Mario Testa. The Heathens scored with five minutes to go but in a storming finish Ben Cooper pounced on a chip ahead by Ady Entwistle in his own half, evaded his tackler and ran in a try to seal victory. Fergus Kenny drop kicked the conversion.

The outstanding Ben Lush won the Wightlink Man of the Match award whilst James Morley took the A J Wells Black Dog Award for his ubiquitous performance.

Match report: Ventnor 2nd XV v Millbrook 2nd XV (away)

Captain Rob Newton stepped up to the mark this week and against all the odds managed to summon up 16 players by calling in a few favours. By Friday evening that was down to 15 and on Saturday’s departure to the mainland it was 14. By the time we had reached Portsmouth the numbers were reduced to just 12! Despite this early set back the remaining 12 were determined to give a good account of themselves. At this point it should be mentioned that two of those 12 had never played for Ventnor, Chris Thompson who last played at school six years ago and Mark Pike had never played rugby, ever! Because of this the Ventnor warm up mainly consisted of the rules of the game, experienced players such as Andy Walton freely passing on their knowledge. Fortunately Millbrook had players to spare and two kindly took to the field with Ventnor making it 14 against 15 to make it a more even affair.

The match was played in very hot conditions for this time of the year and that showed on both sides as the tempo was fairly slow, although Millbrook did have the edge on pace. That extra pace and the extra man paid dividends for Millbrook who consistently moved the ball wide and exploited the gaps in Ventnor’s defence. Ventnor started brightly and threatened with two early attacks that ultimately came to nothing. Millbrook then came on strong and pinned Ventnor back in their own 22 before running in their first try of the day. From that point on the stage was set and Millbrook continued to run in the tries, seemingly at will.

In the second half the Ventnor pack were beginning to get on top of their counterparts giving the backs a bit more ball and as a team they began to move forward. Confidence grew and the whole team improved playing it’s best rugby in the last 20 minutes. In the end Millbrook proved too strong and continued their dominant backs performance and earned a great win, made even more triumphant by not allowing a single Ventnor score.

To a man Ventnor left everything on the field, to the point that Captain Rob Newton could not decide on a man of the match. That honour eventually fell to the Millbrook captain who chose outside centre Jonathan Meadowcroft for his effort, support play and moving the ball forward. The AJ Wells Black Dog Award went to Mark Pike for surviving his first ever rugby match!

Match report: Ventnor 2^nd XV 36 – Isle of Wight 2^nd XV 719th September 2009

With a squad whose age range spanned over forty years – when the Beatles were no 1 – Ventnor 2nds kick started their Merit Table 3 campaign with a handsome win over the Isle of Wight. In a match sponsored by Ayres Punchard Management, Ventnor eased their nerves with a searing run by Ross Harris for an early unconverted try.

The Isle of Wight were showing well at this point and it took some terrific defence by Shaun Williams, Alex Morton and Sam Pickard – on an outstanding debut for Ventnor – to stem the tide.

This pressure-defence led to Ventnor’s second try when Morton pounced on a loose ball to score his first try for the club. With Ian Collins and Gary Ball gaining ascendancy over their opposite props, Ventnor began to get more of the ball and after good work by young George Creighton at a ruck, Jonathan Meadowcroft put Zack ‘Goon’ Davis over for the home side’s third try which Warren Riches converted.

However the Island came back with an interception try by Eric Wright which was converted by Gary Warvill. Ventnor’s concentration was beginning to waver and the Island would have scored again but for an unbelievable tackle by Pickard on Warvill in the act of scoring.

At the break skipper Mike Flanagan got the home side going again and the second half saw total Ventnor dominance with scrumhalf Nigel Malkin running the game – whilst simultaneously talking the referee to distraction! Malkin’s quick break from a scrum against the head fed Jim McGovern who in turn put Harris away for his second try.

Then Williams chased a kick-ahead to touch down before Rob Newton – on his Ventnor return – did a good impression of a wild rhino to add the sixth and last Ventnor score with half the opposition clinging onto him. Riches converted all three second half tries.

Sam Pickard was the Wightlink Man of the Match whilst Warren Fresle took the A J Wells Black Dog award.
