Gosport and Fareham 2nd XV 0 – Ventnor 2nd XV 40

Ventnor 2nds travelled to Gosport ad Fareham for a friendly which resulted in a convincing win for the Island team. Ventnor were on top from the off with Ross Harris cutting through for a try in the early minutes which skipper Warren Riches converted. This was quickly followed by three more tries – from flyhalf Ben Cooper, Zack Davis (from an excellent cross-field kick from Fergus Kenny) and a second from Harris. With Riches converting two of these, Ventnor reached halftime with a comfortable 26 – 0 lead. What followed after the break revealed a great deal about this Ventnor side. A reinvigorated Gosport and Fareham side simply laid siege to the visitor’s line but, because of stubborn resistance and dogged team spirit, they never breached it. Great defence led by Jim Pemberton, Shaun Williams, Ben Pearce and Rob Jackson kept the forwards quiet whilst Jonathan Meadowcroft held the back line together like Horatio on the bridge. In the last quarter, with the home side beginning to wilt, Ventnor picked up their attacking game with Scott Jesney and Gary Ball at last taming their front row opposition. From midfield, scrumhalf Kenny made a dart and then flicked out a perfect pass to Ben Cooper who lacerated the defence with a great line to touch down. Then, straight from the kick off, Oly Fulljames galloped through the entire opposition to score under the posts. Riches converted both tries. As the final whistle went, Ventnor were still going forward with the excellent Simon Farnworth, in his first game, blasting his way down the right-hand touch line until stopped a few metres short.

Oly Fulljames was the Wightlink Man of the Match whilst Gary Ball took the A J Wells Black Dog award.

For this Merit Table 3 match, sponsored by Leslies Motor Group, Ventnor loaned Overton some players because the visitors travelled over a few short. Therefore it was ironic that Overton opened the scorer through a try from Tom Engelgardt, a Ventnor stalwart. However these were the last points the visitors would score as Ventnor began to dominate. However they made hard work and the score remained the same until Martin McMeechan, frustrated by his teammates poor decision making, took matters in his own hands and bashed over for a couple of tries. With scrumhalf Graham Simlar directing play, the second half saw more pattern to Ventnor’s game and the scores began to mount up. Firstly Allan Bridges made a searing break until gravity took over and Arran Marriott darted over in the corner. Then skipper Mike Flanagan, Ian Collins, Alex Morton and Gary Ball took the game to the opposition and Nolan Winter, to the surprise of all (including himself), ran in from forty yards. After smart defensive work from Jonathan Meadowcroft, winger Edwin Bodros’ thirst for work paid off when he ran eighty metres to arrive under the posts where – in a generous show of entente cordiale – he handed the ball to Engelgardt to score for Ventnor in Tom’s last game before joining the army. Finally, in the best movement of the game, continual phase play culminated in an excellent try by Shaun Williams. Fullback Warren Riches, who was strong all day, slotted four conversions. Promisingly for Ventnor, the match featured a great debut performance by Ben Pearce whilst Luke Marsland showed that he has potential in his first ever game of senior rugby.

Deservedly Martin McMeechan was the Wightlink Man of the Match whilst Shaun Williams took the A J Wells Black Dog award.

Ventnor really stepped up the intensity from last week’s disappointment and dominated right from the off. The forwards gave no space or time for the Lychett pack and dominated at the break-down, line out and scrum.

The entire Ventnor pack chewed up their opponents and spat them out, driving them relentlessly in mauls and never letting them build up a head of steam.

This enabled the skilful flyhalf Damien Marriott and his back line cut up the midfield which they did all afternoon. In fact Marriott had a great afternoon scoring two tries himself and setting up tries for Ben Cooper and two touchdowns for Shaun Williams. Scrumhalf Paul Berry scored another try and directed his forwards brilliantly who tired the opposition with a number of ground-gaining mauls.

Todd Riches – Ventnor’s captain and no 8 – led from the front and scored a hat-trick of tries and inspired his fellow forwards Scott Jesney and the athletic Rob Jackson to further scores. Ben Cooper (2) and Damien Marriott (4) shared the conversions.

The Wightlink Man of the Match was Warren Fresle and Chris Dobbas won the A J Wells Black Dog award.

Match report: Ventnor 1^st XV 21 – Isle of Wight 1st XV 2519th September 2009

The match was played on a hot day and a rock hard pitch, but despite the testing conditions, this was a keenly contested and passionate local derby, sponsored by Yates Brewery.

Ventnor bossed the first half and the host’s hard work was rewarded with two outstanding tries. Some slick handling from Ventnor resulted in Fulljames and Rogers both crossing the line. In the interim, Marriot successfully kicked a penalty. Ventnor were 13 points without reply.

As half-time approached, the Isle of Wight put their first points on the board. Isle of Wight forward, Baldwin, capitalised on a mismatch and from the blind side he crashed over the line to score.

In the second half the visitors scored a penalty. Ventnor’s Ben Cooper then scored a well taken try in the corner, benefiting from some good handling from Riches.

With only ten minutes remaining, Ventnor seem assured of victory. But in a shock turn-around, the Isle of Wight, using the same ploy, successfully twice targeted the right hand corner to eventually emerge as victors in this closely fought encounter.

Training at Ninham

Training starts again on Wednesday 15th July – 6:30 pm. Because the pitch is still out of bounds due to continuing seeding etc, Derek Harvey has very kindly allowed us to use his land at Ninham County Holidays caravan park. For directons, see below:

continue down this private drive 10 miles per hour please ! 250m futher on you will see a sign for late night arrivals with an entrance on your right into a large paddock.

Fergus Kenny is voted in as Ventnor Rugby Club 1st XV Captain

At the recent AGM (22nd May 2008), Ventnor Rugby Club found itself in the enviable position where we had two excellent candidates putting their names forward to become First Team Captain – namely Fergus Kenny and Rob Newton. Accordingly all fully-paid-up Playing Members of the club were asked to vote. The result is that Fergus Kenny will lead out the First XV next season.

Fergus states, “It is a great privilege to be given the captaincy. I have spoken to Rob before, during and after the voting process and he has been tremendously supportive and has agreed to lead the pack. This is excellent for the team since Rob is a great motivator who leads by example”.

Rob states, “I am really looking forward to playing again after my injury problems last season. Fergie did a great job last year after taking on the captaincy in difficult circumstances and I look forward to leading his pack. We are both determined to win promotion back into Hampshire Division Two”.
