This weekend Ventnor 1sts entertain the Nomads at Watcombe in a crucial Hampshire Div 2 match.

This match was originally scheduled for January but was snowed off. Nomads currently lie third in the league – one place below us so we need to win this game to keep our promotion challenge on track.

They will be bringing a large support contingent with them so please make every effort to be at Watcombe on Saturday afternoon to cheer the lads on.

Kick off is at 3pm. The match is generously sponsored by The Central Tap, Ventnor

This rearranged fixture between Ventnor and their close league rivals was closer than the scoreline suggested but the victory was all-important to Ventnor after their disappointing display against the Isle of Wight before Christmas. Damien Marriott settled Ventnor’s nerves with an early individual try but Fawley came straight back and took the lead with a converted try of their own. Ventnor’s scrumhalf Fergus Kenny then showed great presence of mind with a quick tap penalty and a run in for a try which was converted by Todd Riches. However Fawley’s dominance of the lineout gave them a good stream of possession and they scored again before half time to take the lead 14 to 12. After the break, Ventnor began to get their game together and Chris Dobbas scored a brace of tries with his direct running from centre – the second one from an interception from far out. Then Riches scored from the back of a lineout after a searing run from Tom Engelgardt put pressure on Fawley’s defence. All of these second half tries were converted by Marriott.

Jim Pemberton was the Wightlink man of the match for yet another great performance in both attack and defence. Tom Engelgardt took the A J Wells Black Dog award as he heads back to the Army to continue his basic training

This Saturday (6th March), the 1st XV play Locksheath Pumas in Hants Div 2 at Watcombe. The match is sponsored by Angela Coaches and the kick off is at 3pm. Please support the lads because this is an important match against one our main promotion rivals.

The 2nds are playing against the Hurries Gentleman at Sandown – again the kick off is at 3pm. Our team boasts the names of Engelgardt (snr), Malkin, Ricketts, Benfield, Babington (snr and jnr), Taylor etc – so we are represented by some mighty fine gentlemen too.

RFU Grand Draw Raffle (1st Prize, £10,000 etc)

Those of you who have still to return your ticket stubs to me (with the cash of course) will be delighted to hear that we have managed to get an extension so you now have until 15th March! Please try to move these tickets because the raffle provides an important contributor to our income and allows us to keep player subscriptions so low. Remember, the club gets to keep 90% of all the money.

No doubt you will have all seen some details with regards the up and coming tour to Birstall RFC in Leicester, April 23rd-April 25th 2010. Total for tour will be £100, with a £30 deposit payable asap so that the hotel can be booked, this deposit needs to be paid by Friday 12th March 2010 at the latest.

This Saturday (27th Feb), Ventnor 1st XV play Lychett Minster at Watcombe – kick off 2:30. This game was originally meant to be played on 9th Jan but got snowed off. There is a chance that the pitch may not recover from the rain, so keep an eye on your emails for updates.

The 2nd XV game away to Tottonians has been cancelled.

Over the last few days, Flan has sent out 36 texts to players to check on their availability for the 2nd XV game. He has had 4 replies. If you get a text, please reply immediately so Flan knows where he stands. It’s bloody hard work being the skipper of the 2nd XV – especially before an away fixture – so please be more pro-active. There are only two more Merit Table 3 matches this season, so let’s make sure we put out a strong team for both.

If you think that Flan may not have your current phone number, please contact him on 07859 348607.

Don’t forget your RFU raffle tickets. We need to move these to bring in funds for the club.

The 1st XV were meant to be playing Kingsclere away this Saturday (20th Feb) but Kingsclere cannot put a front row together so they have cried off. Ventnor get the two points so there’s no real damage apart from being able to improve our points difference. Kingsclere was the team against whom the lads scored 114 points earlier in the season at Watcombe.

The 2nd XV is travelling to Andover for a Merit 3 clash. There is very limited room on the coach for supporters so please contact me before just turning up.

On Sunday, there is a celebration game for County’s birthday (another one!). We’re meeting at 1:00 at Watcombe for a 2:00 kick off. Anyone who fancies a run-out, bring your boots. There will some old faces making an effort so it should be an occasion to remember.

Ventnor RFC Tour 2010 update

The tour is still very much alive and kicking my good friends. I have been trying to get money from you since July last year but alas I feel the current climate has some what limited all our pocket money!! Some of you have parted with your hard earned cash but now I need more of you!!!

The tour is planned for weekend of Friday 23rd April-Sunday 25th April. We will be staying in a hotel (yes a actual hotel!!!) for two nights in the lovely city of Leicester and have a coach booked to take us up. Hotel, coach, limited beer kitty all in £100. We have some games of rugby and I believe a game of cricket on the agenda. Fancy dress will be of a Roman theme with plenty of emperors, slaves and possibly the odd eunuch amongst us!!

I need to book the hotel in the next few weeks so £30 deposit needed ASAP with full amount paying before departure. Money can be paid to Damo, James or Babs. Cash only although Damo may let swipe your card, I just dont know where that will be!!!
