Aldershot and Fleet 0 – 38 Ventnor

By GH

As the season nears the end Ventnor face a race for promotion and also are in the running for being champions of the league. With this in mind, this away game to Aldershot and Fleet became even more significant as Ventnor looked to gain a bonus point victory.

The first half of the game was very intermittent as a slippery ball hampered passing, but a strong run from prop forward Daniel Newbery lead to the half’s only points and the score at half time was 0-5.

The second half saw a different approach to the game with clever phase play giving more opportunities. Dean Magnursson got the first points of the half to which Fergus Kenny added the conversion. A high tackle to Ross Harris saw him have to come off to be assessed by club physio Zoe Wilmott-Amies. His replacement, Ed Blake, scored under the posts a couple of minutes later after 2 tackles failed to hold onto him. Sam Lines then went over for his first of the match after a well worked backs move.

Then came a very strange try for Dean Magnursoon as he broke off from the back of a mall to then walk over then line with the ball. The Aldershot defenders just simply watched him like the whistle had gone but it hadn’t and so came the easiest try of his very long career. The final try came from the resulting Aldershot kick off. It was collected by Sam Pickard who took the ball to the line then popped to captain Todd Riches who put Sam LINES through a gap for him to run the rest of the pitch to touch down under the posts.

The celebrations were marred by some very sad news coming from our friends at fellow Hampshire 2 side Romsey RFC. Their 20 year old blindside flanker, Macca Campbell had passed away in a car crash whilst travelling home from their game against Alresford. We send our condolences to his family and friends at this very sad time.
