Pre-Season Match: Southampton RFC v Ventnor RFC pre 2023-24 season friendly

We have an away pre-season friendly against Southampton RFC tomorrow (Saturday 2nd Sept). Skipper Jewy Jones is taking a mix of old and new players with Dylan Gray and Will Broomfield making their debuts.

Training under Jason Evans, Clive Cardwell-Hill and Neil Evans has gone well with rarely less than 20 players attending. Let’s see if we can put it all into practice.

The Old Nags

We were privileged to host The Nags who camped at Watcombe over the bank holiday. The Nags are an itinerate group of veteran rugby players – mostly stemming from Wales – and organised by our own Neil Evans. They have been fundraising for Cancer Research UK for over ten years and raised an amazing £200k.

To date they have played rugby, canoed rivers and climbed mountains. This particular adventure consisted of walking round the Island in three days (a couple of them did it in two!). In so doing they raised in excess of £6000. Deano and I shared the evening bar duties over the four days and – we can inform you – they know how to drink and sing as well!

Vice President’s Lunch

There’s an error on the fixture list (which Andrew has corrected on the website) which shows the first Vice Presidents’ Lunch to be on 14th October. THIS IS INCORREECT (apologies).

The first VPs’ Lunch will take place on the occasion of our 1st XV home match on 30th September when we play Andover 2nds in the Hampshire League.

Anyone interested in attending, please contact me.

Remember, if you think you know someone who may be susceptible to be persuaded to join (you know the drill: The Rev and Tommo can be very persuasive!), bring them along as your guest. I will send out reminders and details closer to the time.

Other Dates for Your Diary

On Saturday 23rd Sept, both 1st and 2nd XVs play at Isle of Wight RFC in the leagues.

After our double victory there at the end of last season, we want a repeat so the more support the merrier please!

Best Regards

James
