Ventnor Rugby Club News Update 27 November 2025
Another great day at Watcombe on Saturday with the 1st XV proving that they’re able to perform in the mud, wind and freezing rain with a bonus point win against a very strong Winchester 3rd XV.
Jewy Jones, Max Wheeler, Lewy Morton and Dan Lythgoe were the try scorers while Josh Ford kicked a penalty and Tom Crews kicked the conversion to finish the game (which didn’t seem to have registered with the HRFU results system at the time).
Jewy was the A J Wells Man of the Match while Josh took the Red Funnel Moment of the Match award. With Portsmouth losing, Ventnor are now on their own at the top of Hampshire Counties Three with maximum points.

Ventnor 2nds had a tough day away at table-topping New Milton where a combination of a few late drop outs and a strong opposition meant a 67 – 0 defeat. This only tells part of the story as the reduced Ventnor team put on a great performance in trying conditions and – once more – demonstrated the squad spirit that is prevalent in the club this season. Fred Fairman was the A J Wells Man of the Match while Ollie Wood provided the Red Funnel Moment of the Match. A big shout out goes to Ewan Castle for looking after all the equipment, to Andy Teague for his role as travelling coach and Luke Starkey for an outstanding debut.
Congratulations to Ewan Castle and Fred Fairman who received their Ventnor Squad Player ties having met the criteria of a minimum of 8 training sessions plus 3 home games and 3 away games.
Back at Watcombe, many thanks to Bradders and Molly for their unstinting work behind the bar, to Liz who looked after not only the VPs’ lunch plus a mass of washing up but also the serving of the post-match food which was expertly prepared by Roly and Lisa. Thanks also to Sally down at The Bistro at London House for the catering for the VPs’ lunch and to The Rev Warren Riches for the supplying the unusually good prizes for the raffle (although I noticed Biz left his doll behind- that must be fine-worthy!).

And, of course, a big shout out to Nancy Finan for bringing along Ted Funnel – the Red Funnel Ferries mascot – who foxed everyone with his real identity and had fun with kids and adults alike.
THIS Saturday, Ventnor 1sts have another home game, this time against ALTON who are holding their own in the league where everybody seems to be able to beat everybody on their day so the lads won’t be approaching the game with any feeling of over-confidence.
