Ventnor 1st XV 5 – 71 Bognor XV, 04/11/2017

By James Green

Even though the score indicates that it was a one-sided match, in phases Ventnor played some very good rugby, and in reflection will take a larger number of positives from this match than negatives.

In a hard-hitting encounter, Ventnor played as they usually do, tirelessly for 80 minutes, not giving up, and walking off the pitch battered and bruised, but with heads held firmly high. The first half was well contested with the score 5 – 24 to Bognor. Ventnor’s try coming from Sam Lines, which was a well worked effort to score.

The second half painted a slightly different picture. Even though Bognor’s number 4 received a yellow card for what only can be described as an act of petulance rage, this was after fore arm smashing Ventnor’s Price in the throat, Ventnor could not make the man advantage count. Unfortunately, the last 15 minutes consisted of Bognor’s dominance as the differences in fitness levels showed. Despite Ventnor’s best efforts they struggled in keeping Bognor from scoring quite regularly in this period.
