Match report: Ventnor RFC 1st XV v Isle of Wight RFC 1st XV, 25/11/2017

Match report: Ventnor RFC 1st XV 10 – 45 Isle of Wight RFC 1st XV, 25/11/2017 With the sun shining and a big crowd in support this weekend saw the first Derby game of the season between Ventnor 1st XV and Wootton 1st XV. Ventnor started the game in brilliant fashion as the first 10 minutes showed dominance, however they couldn’t capitalize on the opportunities they’d made for themselves within the opening quarter. A number of unforced errors opened the gates for the away side as they managed to run in 4 try’s and a penalty to go into...

Match report: Alresford 1st XV v Ventnor 1st XV, 10/11/2017

Alresford 1st XV 57-10 Ventnor 1st XV, 10/11/2017 Reporter Samuel Dawson Ventnor were scheduled to travel to Alresford this weekend in pursuit of the ever elusive first win of season. Due to various commitments it was to be a bare 15 that travelled to play but with the ever welcomed support of a number of club VP’s. Led out by Captain Jake Babington, Ventnor started aggressively from the kick off with some strong carries led by Price and Morley. With many players playing out of their normal position it didn’t take too long for Alresford to cross the line and touch down. This failed to dampen the spirit of Ventnor as they continued to play with the belief that they could come out on top. This situation became a common theme and Alresford scored again. With plenty of determination and no small amount of hard work Ventnor stuck to their game plan, retained possession and with some more strong forward work by the pack they found themselves with a series of penalties close to points territory. After a few tap and go penalties Babington had realized the crash balls were being defended well and dummied a pass giving himself just enough space to squeeze his slight frame between two defenders to score his first try of the day just before the end of the first half. This encouraged Ventnor...

Match report: Ventnor 2nd XV v Kingsclere XV, 04/11/2017

Ventnor 2nd XV 5 v 40 Kingsclere XV Kingsclere who haven’t been to Ventnor since they dropped out of the Hampshire leagues, arrived with a full squad, medical team, media team & coaches. They were not there to make up the numbers! In comparison Ventnor had to dig deep to get their team out, fielding 4 players whose total age equalled 196! Ventnor started brightly and if Grant Richardson had managed to hang on to the Ball as he powered through it result could have been very different. Ventnor’s cause was not helped when Ben Weld had to leave the field of play through illness and he never returned! Despite the loss of Gough, Fox and Weld Ventnor played to the end, And Damo Marriott managed to get a try under the posts. Warren Riches took a quick drop goal ( he obviously thought there was time for Ventnor to get back into the game!). & missed. The game finished with this. Thanks to all that turned up & to Kingsclere for lending Ventnor players. Team: Richardson, Gough,Stemmet, Babington, Davis, Taylor, Weld, Magnurson, Marriott, Harris, Stewart, Fox, Blow, Cripps, Riches AJ Wells & Sons Man of the Match Simon Blow Ventnor Haven Fishery Cod Eye of the Day: Stuart Babington ( for being old enough to know he shouldn’t have...

Match report: Ventnor 1st XV v Bognor XV, 04/11/2017

Ventnor 1st XV 5 – 71 Bognor XV, 04/11/2017 By James Green Even though the score indicates that it was a one-sided match, in phases Ventnor played some very good rugby, and in reflection will take a larger number of positives from this match than negatives. In a hard-hitting encounter, Ventnor played as they usually do, tirelessly for 80 minutes, not giving up, and walking off the pitch battered and bruised, but with heads held firmly high. The first half was well contested with the score 5 – 24 to Bognor. Ventnor’s try coming from Sam Lines, which was a well worked effort to score. The second half painted a slightly different picture. Even though Bognor’s number 4 received a yellow card for what only can be described as an act of petulance rage, this was after fore arm smashing Ventnor’s Price in the throat, Ventnor could not make the man advantage count. Unfortunately, the last 15 minutes consisted of Bognor’s dominance as the differences in fitness levels showed. Despite Ventnor’s best efforts they struggled in keeping Bognor from scoring quite regularly in this period.
