Hampshire Premiership South League 2025-26 – Merit Table

With Jack Rushton called up to the first team, Jack Gilbey stepped up as captain as Ventnor’s 2nd XV travelled away to Tottonians. Ventnor fielded several debutants and a different team sheet to what was expected, so position changes were made at the last minute, which included a Tottonians player in the front row to ensure the scrums would not be uncontested.

ottonians were fielding a strong team including nine players from more senior teams who had been unable to travel to their away fixture and the home team started strongly, scoring an unconverted try in the first five minutes as Ventnor found their feet. Several minutes later Totts were close to another score just inches from the try line, but a stunning jackal from debutant Ben Mumford halted their progress. But it was only a temporary lull and Tottonians were able to manufacture a second try which was converted.

Despite the seemingly one-way traffic, Ventnor fronted up well with the evergreen Dean Magnurson and Sean Frampton working hard in the loose and Henrik Brown and skipper Jack Gilbey combining well at the lineout. Ed Blake put Ventnor onto the scoreboard with a typical powerful thrust but halftime came with the score at 26 -5.

Nathan Frampton came on and immediately imposed himself on the game with several big hits and a notable charge up the field. Grant Richardson and Charlie Magnurson combined to create pressure on the home team defence and Blake was able to ghost his way over for his second try. However the power and experience of the Tottonians team would not be denied and there were only sporadic moments in which the three Ottley brothers – Harry, Luke and Archie – plus Mumford, Olly Wood and Tony Jacobson were able to show their paces and footwork. The final twenty minutes of the game were all Tottonians but the defence of Dylan Gray, Dan Peat and Dave Rees kept the score down to a respectable level considering the standard of the opposition.

Final score 64 – 10
