Waterlooville RFC 1XV 10-24 Ventnor RFC 1XV 12 December 1992 Match Report

Ventnor RFC 1XV were always in control in this match and, in the end, should have won by a larger scoreline.

A particular feature of the game was the impressive running by the Ventnor backs who took full advantage of some poor Waterlooville tackling.

The Islanders took the lead inside the first ten minutes when a flowing three-quarter movement took the ball out to Ventnor wing.

Warren Fresle, who had created the overlap by switching flanks, scored from a Matt Irving pass. Martin narrowly missed the conversion.

Ventnor increased their lead 15 minutes later when the centre combination of Dixon and Gee found Fresle in space on the opposite number to score under the posts. Martin converted.

Fresle went over the line for a third time just before the interval after Martin had made an excellent run from fullback, but the try was disallowed for a forward pass.

Fresle, however, was not to be denied his hat-trick which came early in the second half. Martin converted a difficult kick.

Some over confident play gifted Waterlooville with a couple of quick tries but Ventnor made amends just before the final whistle when veteran stand-off Dave Green, capped a good game by powering over from close range.
