Ventnor RFC 1XV 36-0 Nomads RFC match report
Saturday 10 October 1992
Ventnor produced a much improved team performance to score an emphatic victory.
The main feature was Ventnor’s tackling and support play, which kept the visitors penned in their own half for most of the match.
The Islanders’ first score came after 15 minutes man of the match, Steve Champion, charged the ball down, picked up the loose ball before feeding winger, Warren Fresle, to score in the corner.
Ventnor RFC 1XV increased their lead 15 minutes later, Champion made a break from the maul within Nomads’ 22 metre line and excellent support play took Biz Burrows over.
Early in the second half, Fresle received the ball blindside, and passed to Champion to power over the line.
Dave Martin slotted a difficult conversion.
Then, Ventnor flanker, John Owen, fed Nigel Malkin, who. made use of the close support for Simon Day to score under the posts. Martin kicked the conversion.
The home side continued to pressure the Nomads defence and were rewarded with a fifth try when Champion used his strength to go over the line.
Nomads frustration was beginning to show and unfortunately, they had their prop sent off for attempted head butt.
Their misery was complete, ten minutes from time. when Fresle scored his second try, from which Martin converted.
