Its here South Islands Sevens 2022 today
It’s here at last. The South Island Sevens international tournament arrives with a bang today, Saturday 21st May through to Sunday 22nd May inclusive at Ventnor RFC Watcombe Bottom (PO38 1LP).
Due to a huge amount of effort from very many people – particularly Chris Fletcher and James Blake, Ventnor RFC’s groundsman – The South Island Sevens kicks off today at Watcombe. The two pitches are looking immaculate and the Watcombe bowl has never looked better.
The Mermaid Bar and The Thatchers Bar are up and ready to roll our several barrels. Gavin and the pitmasters of Isle of Wight BBQ will be cooking the food using sustainable charcoal supplier by IoW Charcoal. The DJs – Our Girl G, DJ Kaf-Tan and Remi Hawkes – will be providing the sounds and there’s even an axe throwing challenge up on the spectacular new viewing terrace.
And if you want some rugby kit, go and have a look at the Lockerstash gear based in the football dug-out!
Gates open at 10:00 with the first kick-off is at 10:30, and then there is wall to wall action spread across two pitches overseen by a team of professional referees.
Today there’s world-class rugby – men’ and women’s in the elite men’s and women’s competition with a truly international cast, – all day until the final at 18:30.There’s lots to do and see – and eat and drink including The Mermaid Bar (gin, Pimms and Guinness) and The Thatchers Cider Bar with their wood-burning grills.
South Island Sevens tickets are to be bought online (there are NO ticket sales on the gate) but the online tickets are available until 3pm on Saturday itself.
Tomorrow is the Sunday Social when you can see the the Isle of Wight team ‘South Island Sundays‘- made up of a combination of players from the Isle of Wight RFC, Sandown and Shanklin RFC and Ventnor RFC (Luke Butler, Dan Bell, Jake Babington, Lewy Morton, Sam Lines) – take part in the mens’ comp’, Tourist Trophy competitions take place.
There is no entry charge tomorrow.
